Eleanor Roosevelt said, “When you cease to make a contribution you begin to die.” That’s probably why so many men from previous generations died within a year of retiring. When we no longer feel useful, we begin to wither away.
This highlights why it is important to always stay engaged in life in a meaningful way whether through employment, self-employment, volunteer work, helping out, mentoring, coaching, and so on. Even someone who is home-bound or disabled can help in various ways via phone, computer, or other means.
When you give of yourself, life has meaning.
