In Nursing, Words Have Power

New NurseI recently saw a new nurse post on SM that she is a “baby nurse.” I often here that phrase, and similar phrases, used by new and experienced nurses alike. Imagine if someone referred to a new MD as a “baby doctor” (not a neonatologist) or new lawyer as a “baby attorney” or even a “baby physical therapist.” Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Words have power. Let’s start calling our ‘newly licensed nurses’ just that and stop calling them ‘baby nurses’ and ‘newbies.’ It is more professional, empowering and respectful. Are you with me?
