My yoga instructor usually imparts some ‘yogic’ wisdom at the end of each class. This week he said, “We have two hands. One is to help others, and the other is to help ourselves.” Such a powerful message in so few words. It beautifully underscores not only the importance of tending to self, but conveys a partnership between the two parts. Always helping others without ever taking time to nurture yourself creates imbalance, depletion of energy, and loss of self. Likewise, never doing anything for others and only focusing on your needs creates a non-productive, unfulfilling, and ever shrinking existence. Help yourself, help others. The two go hand in hand.
