I was speaking to an 81 year old physician who had been recently hospitalized after a bad fall. He told me that in all his years in medicine, he never truly understood, until he was a patient himself, the vital role that nurses play in the healing process. I told him that what he “saw” from his vantage point was only perhaps a tenth of all that we actually do. And if he was impressed with that, he should see what we also do about keeping the rest of the population well, safe, and out of the hospital in the first place.
Whether others understand or value your contributions, don’t ever minimize the significance of your role/work to yourself or others.
